Plastering is an essential task when it comes to renovating or refurbishing your home. The process of plastering can transform any room and give it a fresh, new look. However, before you start plastering, you must ensure you have everything you need to complete the job successfully. In this post, we will look at everything you need to plaster the walls of your home.
Plastering tools
To start with, you need to have the right plastering tools. A good quality trowel is a must-have when it comes to plastering. You should choose a trowel with a comfortable grip and a blade wide enough to spread the plaster easily. You will also need a hawk to hold the plaster while you apply it to the walls. A hawk is a flat square piece of metal or plastic with a handle.
Additionally, you will need a mixing bucket, a paddle mixer, a jointing knife, a float, and a corner trowel. These tools will help you achieve a smooth finish and ensure the plaster is applied evenly. However, if you can afford it, you can get a plastering machine that will help make the job easier and let you complete it much quicker.
Plastering materials
The next thing you need to consider is the plastering materials. You can choose between gypsum plaster, lime plaster, or cement plaster. Gypsum plaster is the most commonly used plaster as it is easy to apply and dries quickly. Lime plaster is a more traditional option often used in older homes. Cement plaster is the most durable of the three but is also the hardest to work with. You should choose the type of plaster that is best suited to your needs and skill level.
Aside from the type of plaster, you will need to purchase plastering mesh tape, which is used to reinforce joints and corners. You should also purchase PVA glue, which is used to prime the walls before applying the plaster. PVA glue will help the plaster stick to the walls and prevent cracking.
Preparation
Before you start plastering, you need to prepare the walls. Remove any wallpaper, paint, or other materials on the walls. Clean the walls thoroughly with soap and water to remove dirt, grease, or dust. Then, use sandpaper to smooth out rough areas and fill any holes or cracks with filler. Once the walls are clean and smooth, apply a layer of PVA glue to prime the walls. Allow the glue to dry for a few hours before applying the plaster.
Application
When applying the plaster, start at the top of the wall and work your way down. Use the trowel to scoop up the plaster from the hawk and spread it onto the wall in a thin layer. Use the float to smooth out the plaster and evenly distribute it on the wall or ceiling.
When applying the first coat of plaster, allow it to dry completely before applying the second coat. It will take around 24 hours. Once the first coat is dry, use the jointing knife to remove ridges or bumps. Then, apply the second coat of plaster in the same way as the first, ensuring it is evenly distributed and smooth.
Finishing
The final step in plastering is the finishing. Use the corner trowel to create a smooth, curved finish in the room’s corners. Use the float to smooth out any remaining bumps or ridges. Once the plaster is completely dry, you can paint or wallpaper the walls as desired.
