How COVID-19 Has Impacted the Lab Industry

Shane ZackBy Shane ZackAugust 4, 2020No Comments3 Mins Read

Scientists are educated and skilled in facing problems that come up to hinder their experiments. However, the coronavirus pandemic poses an entirely different challenge. Most countries have shut down their labs, and scientists have had problems completing their previous work. Others who almost had a breakthrough in different areas had to abandon their work. Moreover, they are uncertain about when they will resume. Despite the adverse effects of COVID-19, few labs benefited and improved their services following the outbreak. Some of the impacts include;

Equipment

Renowned labs were faced with the challenge of being able to test COVID- 19 infections. Their equipment was overwhelmed due to the high number of infections. Drastic measures had to be taken to acquire Covid-19 testing supplies. One of the crucial equipment to test COVID-19 is the Microlab Nimbus developed by Hamilton Nimbus. Moreover, time necessity is vital. Hamilton Nimbus provides a dependable and faster way of testing several samples. This made sure that labs have improved not only in delivery but accuracy.

Launching Test and Stretching Capacity

Facing backlogs of samples, laboratories had to improve in their service delivery. More skilled workforce, reliable equipment, and reagents meant that lab industries had to start partnerships. These partnerships ensured the delivery of equipment and other components on time. Since the first infection of COVID-19 occurred, labs have seen an increase in the number of samples they can test in a single day.

Halted Experiments

The extent to which experiments have been affected depends entirely on data collection procedures. Those experiments that rely on individual presence have been shut down. Scientists cannot complete these experiments from home because they lack equipment and data collection strategies. In cases where data collection has been completely shut down, a disruption is felt by subsequent steps of the research. This pushes back the predicted completion period ahead. With some scientists contracts running down, by the time the pandemic is controlled, most of them will be jobless. Moreover, collected samples that are not correctly stored are likely to be damaged.

Impacts on Students

Institutions have pressured students to go backs to their labs and continue data collections for their thesis despite the risks.  The risk of failing a class could jeopardize your graduation dates. Other students are worried that they will not have enough time to collect results and reach desirable conclusions. Moreover, those studying abroad risk running out time and returning home without degrees. Job markets are also uncertain considering contracts are running out, and only a few companies have extended their periods.

Some institutions have considered their students. Deadlines for research presentations have been pushed back. Ph.D. candidates will benefit from these institutions because they will have more time to perform their experiments to provide viable results.

Similar to other organizations, the lab industry has significantly been impacted by the pandemic. As countries slowly lifted curfew and other COVID-19 measures, reliable equipment had to be set up in labs. Those returning to their jobs will have to cope up with the new working conditions. Unluckily, some employees were laid off to ensure that COVID-19 measures are upheld.
